Southwest Brooklyn Tenant Union

It is hard to argue that housing is not a fundamental human need. Decent, affordable housing should be a basic right for everybody in this country. The reason is simple: without stable shelter, everything else falls apart.

Mission: Empower tenants through education, community action and policy advocacy

Vision: Fair and safe Housing for all

Formed in response to increasing displacement pressure residents are facing, SWBTU is a passionate group of community members working with and for the community by connecting individuals with legal counseling, emotional support, organizing and direct action, media and political education, and mutual aid. The Union supports anyone fighting to remain in their homes or businesses while organizing collectively with allies including elected officials and community based organizations for broader policy that will ensure the right to housing for ALL residents. SWBTU: What We Do

Whether it is our community volunteers going door-to-door, tabling at community events, marching in parades, picketing, or opening our doors to friends and neighbors, outreach is a major component of SWBTU.

SWBTU stands behind tenants and forms coalitions with elected officials, other tenant unions, and community groups to obtain and share information that implements important change.

Many tenants are intimidated by the mountain of information they need to keep their homes and businesses. We meet and mobilize on a regular basis to gather and share important information as well as attend critical community meetings to preserve the neighborhood we love and call home.
